Sri Lanka to have a common user telecom backbone company

The Finance Minister has proposed in his budget speech to create a state company to takeover telecom backbone networks currently operated by telecom companies. Fibre Optic backbone networks owned by telco firms and institutions such as Ceylon Electricity Board, Sri Lanka Railways and Road Development Authority will be brought in to this company. This company will operate under the Information Communication and Technology Agency (ICTA).

Sri Lanka Government to set up Cloud Computing Network

Sri Lanka Government will soon award a tender to set up a Cloud Computing Network. The Cloud Network will store and share information and data of Government institutes. The capacity of cloud network planned to be set up is estimated to be 145 Terra bytes initially.

High speed broadband to link government buildings in Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan Government has taken the initiative to link all government building with high speed broadband links. 3500 government building in 25 districts are to be connected with 100Mbps broadband links.

Google Project Loon in Sri Lanka

Google and Sri Lanka's ICTA (Information Communication and Technology Agency) have signed an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) to deploy Google Project Loon in Sri Lanka. Google will partner with local Telecom operators in Sri Lanka to provide a nationwide LTE network. Project Loon will deploy 13 balloons 20km above earth to beam signal.The balloons are expected to last up to 100 days and will need to be replaced periodically. After trials in New Zealand and Brazil, Google expects the first commercial launch to be in Sri Lanka.

High Usage Internet Data Packages from Sri Lanka Telecom

Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) has launched high usage Terabyte data packages titled Web Inspire and Web Primer recently. These packages offer 675 and 1225 GBytes of data respectively.
